Porta Soprana – the ancient gate of the city

Porta Soprana, also known as Porta Sant’Andrea, was one of the main openings in the extensive city walls of Genoa; it is located on the upper part of Piano di Sant’Andrea, a small plain on the hill overlooking  Piazza De Ferrari. It is called ‘Soprana’ from Latin ‘Super’ (as in ‘superior’), because of its position above the ground level.  One of the few surviving entrance gates of Genoa, it was built between 1155 and 1158. It has the benefit of being located within a stone’s throw of Christopher Columbus’ historic house museum.

The Porto Antico — Old Harbour Marina

The Porto Antico is merely a part of the city’s present port, and nowadays it is used as a residential and service area, touristic and cultural centre.

It is divided into two concession areas, managed by two private companies but still of public domain and one other area managed directly by the municipality of Genoa.

The area was redeveloped and completed in the 90s in lieu of an abandoned dock area: the large waterfront and a number of quays is where the Aquarium of Genoa and other historical and touristic landmarks are located, covering a surface of over 230.000 m².
